Just a note to everyone: I finnished up the last of my 7 Coast Guard exams and passed. I'll be spending the next two months on the Mantanuska, a ferry for the Alaska Marine Highway. This link shows this vessel and all the others in Alaskas fleet. http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/services/details/vsslinfo.html#MAT
Sometime in late July or August after I've finished this last bit of cadet sea time I will be getting my USCG 3rd Assistant engineers license which means I can start working for money instead of experience.

That's cool. And WELCOME to the blog BEN! Jaime had tried to get me to join the coastguard. I only got as far as the brochures. Good Work. Do you fish for Salmon? cause there is some great fishing up there...

Im not actually joining the coast guard. The coast guard is just the agency that governs my license.

Ah. What do you do exactly?

I work on merchant vessels as an engineer. The engineers job is to keep the ship running. We stand a watch making sure everything is running properly while under way and if anything breaks we fix it. Essentially the engineers are responsible for the upkeep and repair of everything on board.

That sounds exciting, challenging, and fun too. I hope they give you some free time to fish.
